Tourcode: ECOT11 Tour: Lhasa- Kathmandu Highland Tour (5 Days including Mount Everest Base!):

Before leaving Lhasa for Zhangmu border, we should have finished our sightseeing in Lhasa or Lhasa plus Tsedang area. Because this tour includes visits to Gyangtse, Shigatse and Mount Everest (they all are located to the west of Lhasa city), so our original tour should exclude them.

We set out for Gyantse on the first day by the old road. However, if the road to Gyantse is blocked, we will come down and take the new and paved road to Shigatse. We visit the Perkhor monastery in Gyantse if the road is O.K. When we arrive at Shigatse if time allows, we visit Tashilunpo monastery. Shigatse is the second biggest city in Tibet, and the permanent residence to Panchen Lama (top living Buddha in Tibetan Buddhism). You can see the Pagoda tombs for successive Panchen Lama and a giant bronze cast Buddha stature of Maitreya (wisdom) Buddha in this monastery.

On the way to Shegar, we have a chance to visit Natang monastery, just by the road (about 40 km to the west of Shigatse). Though it quite small in size these days it used to be much famous for being the third biggest scripture printing monastery in Tibet in the past. We follow our guide’s advice to get through the check point, then we will climb and get through Jiatsola pass (5225m). Here, on two sides of the pass are two high mountains: MountTsenleri to our right (6404m) and Mount Laguigangri to our left front (6457m). If the weather is nice we can see them both.

We enjoy the fantastic view of Mount Everest in the sunset from Rongbuk monastery which is almost the highest monastery in Tibet situated at an elevation of 5200m above sea level. The Base camp of Mount Everest is about 4km (2 hours of hike) from here. This also is the point to which a Slovenian skier successfully skied down from the top of Mount Everest in the year 2001. Similarly, Old Tingri (Ganggha) was and still is the base for climbing Mount Everest. We can enjoy magnificent views of Mount Shishapangma (8027m) to our right and mount Rabujiekang (7374m) to our front left from the Tongla pass (35km before arriving at Nyalam). Leaving Nyalam, we will descend from 3500m to 2670m at Zhangmu. The views in this valley are very beautiful the road will give you unforgettable impression. Upon our arrival to Zhangmu, we check out the Customs and get into Nepal through the Friendship Bridge.
