Makalu Base Camp Trekking

* 19 Days (4 Days Kathmandu & 15 Days Camping Trek) * Grade: Challenging
* Max. Elevation: 5100m
* Departs >From Kathmandu, Every Sunday & Tuesday

The Arun river & Makalu base camp route is one of the wildest treks in the country, & it is necessary to bring along one's own tent & food. One treks up the Arun River close to the Tibetan border & then east toward the foot of Makalu. As one approaches Makalu, one definitely leaves civilization behind.

We fly east to Tumlingtar (3,000m) to trek in this remote region. The beautiful & lush Arun Valley is traversed & we walk through bamboo, rhododendron & conifer forests as we cross the Barun Pass (4,312m) & drop to the Barun River Valley. We camp at the upper section of the river, where vegetation is sparse, and then continue to the yak pastures of Sherkha (3,692m), just below snow-peaks & glaciers. On this trek, we encounter various ethnic groups-Newar, Limbu & Rai in the earlier part & Tibetan-Buddhists in the higher reaches. A final uphill grind brings us to the silent & desolate beauty of the Base Camp (4,461m) of Makalu (8,575m), the fifth highest mountain in the world. Views of the east face, Everest, Lhotse & Cho-Oyu are simply marvelous! Our descent into the pine & rhododendron forest from the Barun Valley takes us past the lower Barun Glacier & into the Makalu basin & to Tumlingtar to catch the flight back to Kathmandu.
